Why Wound Care Matters In Hospice
In hospice, wound care has a different purpose than in other settings. Complete healing may not always be possible, but comfort, protection, and infection prevention always are.
Thoughtful wound care can:
- Reduce pain and discomfort
- Minimize odor and drainage
- Lower the risk of infection and complications
- Protect fragile skin from additional breakdown
- Help your loved one feel cleaner, calmer, and more at ease
Our approach is practical and compassionate, built around what is realistic at home and what matters most to your family.
How Our Team Supports Wound Care
Wound care in hospice is never one person’s job, it is a coordinated team effort. Our nurses, CNAs, and other clinicians work together to support you and your loved one through each stage.
We help by:
- Assessing wounds regularly – size, depth, drainage, odor, pain, and surrounding skin
- Choosing appropriate dressings and supplies – based on comfort, protection, and ease of use
- Creating a simple wound care routine – that fits your loved one’s condition and your capacity as a caregiver
- Teaching you what to do between visits and when to call – so you are not guessing alone
- Communicating changes with the Medical Director – especially if pain, infection, or rapid change appears
Our focus remains the same at every visit: comfort, dignity, and protection, not just checking a box on a chart.
What To Expect During a Wound Care Visit
Knowing what will happen can make wound care feel less intimidating. During a typical wound-focused visit, your nurse will:
- Ask how your loved one has been feeling and if there have been changes in pain, odor, or drainage
- Remove old dressings carefully, watching for signs of discomfort and infection
- Clean and assess the wound and surrounding skin
- Apply new dressings that best match the wound’s current needs
- Review any positioning, pressure-relief strategies, or skin-care steps to use between visits
- Explain what they are seeing in simple language and when you should call for extra help
You are welcome to participate, observe, or step out for a moment, whatever feels right for you and your loved one.

Explore Your Care OptionsWhen to Ask for Extra Wound Care Support
You never have to wait for a crisis before asking for help. It is important to reach out if you notice:
- Increased redness, warmth, swelling, or pain around a wound
- New or worsening odor or drainage
- Fever or signs of infection
- New areas of skin breakdown (heels, hips, tailbone, elbows, shoulders, ears)
- Dressings that are difficult to keep in place or become soaked quickly
- Concerns that the current plan is not working or is too hard to manage
If you are unsure whether something is urgent, we would rather you call and ask. Our nurses and on-call support can help decide what is needed.
What Happens If Wounds Are Not Supported Well
Without proper wound support:
- Pain and discomfort can worsen
- Infection risk increases, sometimes leading to hospital visits
- Odor and drainage may cause distress or embarrassment
- Skin breakdown can spread to new areas
- Caregivers may feel afraid to touch or move their loved one
With a thoughtful hospice wound care, families often notice:
- Better daily comfort for the patient
- Fewer unexpected crises
- More confidence during dressing changes
- Relief knowing the wound is being monitored closely
- A calmer environment for everyone
