Volunteering with AlēvCare Hospice

Some of the most meaningful moments in hospice care happen in the quiet. Sitting beside someone who does not want to be alone. Listening to a story they have told a hundred times. Offering steady presence when words are hard to find. If you feel drawn to that kind of presence, hospice volunteering may be a good fit for you.

You do not need a medical background to make a difference. You simply need a steady heart, a willingness to listen, and the desire to show up for people in one of life’s most sacred seasons.

At AlēvCare Hospice, volunteers are an important part of our Grow Small culture. They help care feel personal, neighborly, and grounded in the North Texas community we love.

What Hospice Volunteers Do

Hospice volunteers support patients and families in simple but powerful ways. While volunteers do not provide hands-on medical care, they add warmth, companionship, and practical help alongside the clinical team.

Depending on your interests, training, and availability, you may:

  • Visit patients for conversation and companionship
  • Read, play music, or share quiet activities
  • Sit with a patient so a caregiver can step away for a short break
  • Help with simple, non-medical tasks approved by the care team
  • Assist with office projects or administrative support
  • Help with special projects or events that bless families or staff

Every assignment is matched thoughtfully. You will never be asked to do something you have not been trained for or are not comfortable doing.

Why Volunteer With AlēvCare Hospice

When you volunteer with AlēvCare, you are joining a locally owned hospice that takes its values seriously. Our Grow Small philosophy means we are committed to staying personal, grounded, and maintaining our hometown feel, even as we serve more families across North Texas.

As a volunteer, you can expect:

  • Respect and appreciation for your time and presence
  • Clear orientation and training before you visit patients
  • Ongoing support and communication from the volunteer coordinator and our team
  • Opportunities to use your strengths in ways that truly matter
  • A sense of belonging in a hospice family that is focused on people, not numbers

Who Can Volunteer

We welcome volunteers from many backgrounds and seasons of life, including:

  • College students or young adults exploring healthcare, ministry, or service
  • Working adults who want to give a few hours each month
  • Retirees with time, wisdom, compassion, and experience to share
  • People who have had a meaningful hospice experience and want to give back

Because we care for vulnerable patients, volunteers must complete an application and interview, pass background checks and required screenings, participate in orientation and training, and agree to respect confidentiality and professional boundaries.

Training and Support

You will never be sent into a home or facility without preparation. Our training is designed to help you feel confident, informed, and supported.

Volunteer preparation includes:

  • Orientation to hospice and AlēvCare’s philosophy of care
  • Education on what to expect in patient homes and facilities
  • Guidance on communication, boundaries, and emotional self-care
  • Instructions on documentation and who to contact with concerns
  • Ongoing check-ins and opportunities to ask questions

Our goal is to support not only the families we serve, but also the volunteers who serve alongside us.

Where Volunteers Serve

Volunteer opportunities may be available:

  • In patient homes
  • In assisted living or long-term care facilities
  • In our Mansfield and Cleburne offices for administrative support
  • Occasionally through phone calls, cards, or other virtual support when appropriate

We work hard to match your location, comfort level, and availability with patient and family needs.

My mother was cared for by AlevCare during the last few months of her life. From the administration, volunteers, chaplains, aids and especially the nurses the care she received was top notch. My sister and I feel that their compassionate and thoughtful care greatly improved the quality of her life. Additionally, they communicated with us frequently and we knew what to expect. Since Mom passed (gently and painlessly)they have been very supportive for our family.

I highly recommend AlevCare.

Miss Becky came into my life from a referral. What an absolute Godsend she is! Her crew were quick to get a hospital bed and supplies to my house and all of the people she sent were the very best at what they do. First it was a company called Horizon that came and set up the bed, oxygen and supplies. Mark at Horizon was professional and fast at delivery and pick up. They also had medications delivered to my door! Then it was the Case Worker, Tonya, and the RN Carlie that made decisions that were best for our situation. Two nurse angels from Mercy named Carol and Kristin took shifts to keep my darling husband comfortable while I grieved. There was also Nurse Celia who was so compassionate and patient with my confused husband!! Miss Becky had everything under control during a heartbreaking time for me and from start to finish the whole team was compassionate, professional and extremely competent. I recommend AlevCare Hospice very highly should your family be in the heartbreaking situation we were in. I call them the parade of angels that show up and manage the entire process for you. Thank you to this lovely team of sweet professionals! I will be grateful to each one of you for the rest of my life!
